Why the GeM Portal?

Over the past several years, the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has gained widespread adoption across India. To strengthen transparency, efficiency, and accountability in public procurement, the Government of India has formally included “32. Development, operation and maintenance of the National Public Procurement Portal – Government e-Marketplace” as an official entry.

Further, the Ministry of Finance has authorized and made procurement through GeM mandatory for government buyers by introducing Rule 149 in the General Financial Rules (GFR), 2017. This rule encourages all government departments, ministries, and public sector units to procure goods and services through the GeM Portal.

As a result, GeM has become the primary platform for government procurement, offering sellers and service providers a significant opportunity to expand their business, access verified government buyers, and participate in a transparent and standardized purchasing process.
